MSP Music Series: David Sutton

October 12, 2015 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm

A violinist that manipulates his instrument to sound like a cello, bass, and a plethora of other sounds, David Gerald Sutton can create a full orchestra all on his own. Utilizing a looper pedal to record his parts onstage, David is able to develop intricate and beautiful soundscapes reminiscent of film composer Thomas Newman (Finding Nemo, Saving Mr. Banks) mixed with electronic dance rhythms similar to Tycho. His knowledge of production helps to bring his classical upbringing into the electronic realm of today’s music. David’s debut EP, entitled Communion, demonstrates this unique genre pairing.

Enlisting the help of former Owl City drummer Matthew Decker, the listener is given a unique perspective of the violin, blending traditional pop structure and melody with ambient instrumental undertones. Songs like Leap of Faith and Infinite are uplifting and anthemic, while To Protect and Watch Over strips away the drums for a very cinematic listening experience. “I wanted to create music that people could understand without lyrics,” says David, “To feel the emotions in the songs not just on a surface level, but in a way that speaks into each person’s life and what they are going through at that very moment.”
